There are so many people out there who need a hand doing some of the little things around their homes.

A handyman is an individual who has a wide range of experience in fixing and repairing all types of household and business fixtures like yard work, gutter cleaning, leaky faucets, broken windows, cleaning and repairing decks, painting and wallpapering rooms, installing switches, fixing doors, or almost any other service that other contractors find too small.

Reasons why starting a handyman business may be right for you. These may include:
  • Low start-up costs.
  • Relatively easy to start.
  • Ability to be your own boss.
  • Doing something you enjoy.
  • High customer demand.
  • It can be done part-time.
  • Home maintenance is a large and growing market.

Some things you need to know when starting a handyman business:

Business plan - Before you start your handyman business, you must draw up a business plan. Be realistic about the initial investment, your weekly, monthly expenses and your income. Try to get suppliers who'll give you a discount on any material you purchases.

License - To start a handyman business, you will need several licenses to get started. You have to apply for a handyman business license and check if you are liable to pay sales tax. You will also need to get insurance and a safety certificate that says you have the capability to work in plumbing and with electric outlets.

Location - Find a garage or shop to do your work in, some of your customers might want to bring things over for you to fix, you will use the shop to store undone jobs and equipment.

Transportation - You may need a nice sized vehicle like a van or truck to accommodate your tools, equipment and to get you to the sites where the work will be done.

Tools - The primary requirements are tools, you need some household tools. This doesn't mean that you need to buy an entire hardware store. Purchasing the appropriate tools and equipment is definitely required for repairing or maintaining whatever it is the client needs. Start with a few must-haves and build up gradually as your business expands.

Mobile phone - Many clients prefer to hire a handyman that can be reached any time of the day or night. So it is good to have a separate phone line for your business.

Pricing - Knowing how much you will be charging your clients can be crucial to your business. This will really depend on the nature of jobs that you plan to undertake, and who you plan to be working for. You can charge on an hourly basis or for the specific job as a whole. Your fee should include the cost of materials, fuel costs and labor charges. If you set them too low, some people will think you do second-rate work. If you set them too high, some people won't hire you because you're too expensive. While your charges should be kept moderate, they must provide for a decent profit.

Advertise - You have to make a way to let people know about the type of work you do. Get a handyman business card printed and hand it out to your friends and acquaintances. Other ways of advertising could be through notices on community and supermarket bulletin boards, fliers, e-mails, leaflets and newspaper ads.

Word-of-mouth - is the best means of advertising. A satisfied customer will advertise your services in a much more expedient manner than you can. So concentrate on quality customer service. Always be prompt and never make appointments you wont or can't keep .
