How to Become a Nanny - An Overview

Becoming a Nanny can be rewarding, challenging and fun as a first or second career. Nannies can be live-in or live-out, full time or part time. The jobs are often well-paid and in some cases, come with perks such as a car, cellphone or travel. If you are responsible, energetic and like to work with children, becoming a nanny may be a good career to consider.

If you are trying to secure employment as a Nanny, it helps to have the right qualifications, and this means you might need to take some courses. These classes will not only give you the credentials that will impress prospective employers, but they will give you the skills and confidence to be a competent nanny.

At a minimum, you should have first aid and CPR training. You can take certification classes from the Red Cross or other local organizations. Local hospitals and non-profit groups often offer CPR training at little or no cost. Since part of your job will be to prepare the children's' meals, you may need to develop some culinary skills. If you're not a confident cook, it might be useful to take cooking classes at cooking schools or through adult education programs. Finally, you can attend school to become a certified nanny. This will set you apart from the less-skilled nannies out there and help you obtain a higher salary from the beginning. Most state employment offices will have information on nanny certification programs, or you can check online for schools in your area. Certification through the International Nanny Association may give your resume an extra edge.

You should also obtain references. Even if you've never worked as a nanny before, you can get references from families you've babysat for or from any daycare or other childcare work you've done. If you've never worked with children before, you might consider trying an Au Pair position first, both to gain experience and see if you like spending time with children every day.

The next step will be to create a resume. It helps to look at some job ads to see what different families are seeking in a nanny. They want to build a relationship with their nanny and make sure they can communicate well about common goals. Most of all, they want someone who makes them feel that their children are in safe hands.

Once you've written your resume, the final step is to sign up with a nanny job search agency and start applying!
